Exploring NIKKOR Lenses: Australia – AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR

While on a bird watching trip in Wandoo Heights Nature Reserve, professional Nikon photographer Scott A. Woodward and advanced amateur photographer Reuben brought along the compact AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, a quintessential prime telephoto lens for sports and wildlife photographers.

Marrying NIKKOR’s advanced optical technology along with superb design, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR only weighs approximately 755g and is one of the world’s lightest*1 300mm autofocus (AF) lens.

Featuring a new Phase Fresnel (PF)*2 lens element, a single Extra-low dispersion glass element, and Nano Crystal Coat, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR is capable of capturing subjects with impeccable sharpness and accuracy with virtually no chromatic aberration and ghosting effects. The lens is also designed with a Vibration Reduction (VR) system which reduces blur caused by camera shake, while providing an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.5 stops faster*3 in NORMAL mode. To get even closer to your subjects, simply attach a teleconverter such as the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II. This applies a 1.7x multiplication factor and pushes the focal length of the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR to 510mm.

*2 The PF lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Diffraction phenomenon explains that light has characteristics as a waveform. When a waveform faces an obstacle, it attempts to go around and behind it, and this characteristic is referred to as diffraction. The diffraction causes chromatic dispersion in the reverse order of refraction. Due to the characteristics of a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens that utilizes the photo diffraction phenomenon, when there is a strong light source within the frame or when light enters the lens from outside of the frame, ring-shaped coloured flare may occur according to shooting conditions. This phenomenon can be minimized with “PF Flare Control” included in Capture NX-D (ver.1.1.0 or later).
